Jamie Peters working his magic against the budgies

Is it just me or is there a lot more news this year than we usually get this time of year.  It seems to me that once the season is over (even in 2000) everyone just heads to Spain or some beach for a couple weeks.  Well, that’s not the case this year.  I doubt any of us are complaining about that either.

According to TWTD, Peters getting called into the Canadian squad for their friendly against Cyprus next week means there’s now a good chance he’ll be in the squad for the Gold Cup in July.

Should he be in the squad,  Canada play the following dates in the group stage.

Date Time (EDT) Opponent Location
07/03/09 8:00 PM Jamaica Carson, CA
07/07/09 7:00 PM El Salvador Columbus, OH
07/10/09 7:00 PM Costa Rica Miami, FL

I can’t seem to find any TV listings. I’ts going to be a long summer waiting for some action.

In other news:

Keane has warned the players not to over do it during their time off.

“It will be painful for some of them because there will be running involved, obviously, particularly when they get back. We will build it up slowly though because you have to be careful with injuries in the first five or six weeks.

“One or two will probably go overboard in the summer but they will regret it soon enough when they come back.

“The game has changed now though in the way players come back to pre-season.

“It’s not like it was when I was a young player. They don’t come back a stone overweight and then run up a hill for 10 miles.”

It’s probably what the squad need.  The Military ‘boot-camp’ they are doing sounds like fun but….

Dan Harding became the 9th player released.  This leaves only Liam Trotter who hasn’t had a chat with Keane yet.  Of course, he has a date at Wembley on Sunday where he’ll be in the Scunthorpe squad facing Millwall in the League 1 Playoff Final.

If you look at any sports website, you can’t help but stumble on a story about who Keane is looking to add to the squad.  Here are just some of the rumored targets which have popped up this week.  Feel free to add any others in the comments section.

  • Brian Easton – Hamilton Academical
  • Danny Higginbotham – Stoke City
  • Paul McShane – Sunderland
  • Bobo Balde – Celtic
  • Joe Mattock _ Leicester City

Finally, it’s not really unexpected but, with the announcment of Roy Keane as manager, season ticket and club merchandise sales are up.  Season ticket sales are now ahead of the total sold for the 2008-2009 season.  I still need to convince my wife that I need a “Tractor Roy” t-shirt.
