PZ, David Sheepshanks, Rick Batchelor and Mick Scrivener during the club trip to Portman Road in 2002.
With all the changes going on at Portman Road recently, it seems one person in particular is going to be the next to make his exit. David Sheepshanks.
Elvin King had an article in today’s Green’Un discussing the options Sheepshanks has. To be honest, there aren’t many. Already Sheepshanks role in the club has been so deminished that he wasn’t even in the loop before the announcments of Magilton leaving and Keane arriving a few weeks ago.
For many Town fans, his departure is probably seen as being not soon enough. After all, he lead the club into administration and, if it wasn’t for him finding Marcus Evans, we could be battling our feathered friends a level lower next season.
However, we can’t forget the success he brought us. Remember where we were when Sheepshanks took over. We had just spent two seasons fighting relegation from the Premiership before relegation struck with what at the time was the worst record in the brief history of the Premiership. Should I even mention the match at Old Trafford that season?
Sheepshanks did lead the club back to the top flight. He did so with sound money management. Once we got there, we shocked the world and even managed to qualify for the UEFA Cup….twice.
Yeah, once Sheepshanks opened the checkbook for Burley and money was spent on bringing in top qualify *cough* talent, things fell apart.
The fact is, there’s no doubt anyone felt the struggles Town have had more than Sheepshanks. He’s as much a Tractor Boy as any of us. He’s a supporter who got his dream, to run the club. It’s just unfortunate things didn’t turn out better.
If my opinion mattered for anything, I’d say, keep Sheepshanks around in some capasity so he can still hold his gig with the Football League. He brings a lot to the sport and allowing him to walk away and on to other opportunties would be a great loss. Whatever happens, Thanks Sheepy and Good Luck.
